Antarctica is a life time experience as we visit the land of penguins. The Icebergs, Birds, Seals, Penguins and everything around seems to be sorcery of nature. From Delhi we travelled to New York. Further New York – Buenos Aires, Argentina flight for just Rs 156/ using British Airways Points to book partner Airline American Airways. From Buenos Aires we travelled Ushuaia, Argentina by flight. Ushuaia is located in Tierra del Fuego archipelago and also known as “End of the World”. This is the gateway to Antarctica Cruises.
Majority cruises have round trip for Antarctica from Ushuaia. We opted for an option Ushuaia – Antarctica by cruise and further Antarctica to Punta Arenas, Chile by flight. From Punta Arenas we travelled Santiago, Chile with LAN airways using British Airways points as LAN is a one world partner airline. From Santiago we travelled Rio de Janeiro with LAN airways using the British Airways points again. From Rio de Janeiro we travelled New York with American Airlines and using British Airways points again. Finally from New York back to Delhi. This trip was one of the best utilisation of miles we did and will always be our most memorable vacation.
We boarded the cruise to Antarctica at Ushuaia. The cruise (4N/5D Journey) was all inclusive meals/drinks with few presentation sessions about Antarctica and wild life. As we cross the Drake Passage (part of ocean travelled for reaching Antarctica) the ship shakes a lot as there are no land /city etc nearby to stop the wind. The first iceberg we saw was like the best scenic beauty we have ever witness. There are many unique species of birds and whales on our way. We had 4 landings – first Cape Horn Island, a remote island in Chile on our way. Second Aitcho Island in Antarctica where we witness hundreds of penguins. The penguins are friendly and we were given guidelines not to come close with wildlife. Third landing was a research base of Chile for studying on Antarctica. A special accommodation build with all required amenities for survival. The last landing was King George Island from where we boarded the flight to Punta Arenas. There is a wooden church in King George island
