Voodoo Market – Lome, Togo

Akodessawa Fetish Market is the biggest Voodoo market globally

(Date of Visit – 23 June, 2019)

Akodessawa Fetish Market is the biggest Voodoo market globally. We were at Accra, Ghana and the Ghana – Togo border was approx 3.5 hrs drive. We started early at 5.30 am and reached the land border of Ghana-Togo by 9 am. West Africa is mostly safe and the drive was across few small towns/ villages of Ghana. As we reached the border there were many local money exchangers and we changed currency from Ghana Cedi to West African franc. The land crossing was smooth and easy to cross. No one demanded/ expected any tips in immigration.

From the togo side of the border we took a taxi to Akodessawa Fetish/ Voodoo Market which was approx 20 mins drive. The market is small with 8-10 shops and we were the only travellers there. There is a fee of 3000  CFA per foreign visiter and 2000 CFA per camera. We were greeted by representative from the market. We paid 10000 CFA for 2 persons and 2 cameras. We took a tour of the market and were explained in details about the voodoo customs and how they mix various dead animal parts to create a medicine for many diseases. There was a small room where they perform the rituals. Overall the experience was unique and the voodoo market was safe to visit.
